Meter-tall Mushrooms

As part of an external brief for ‘Alice in Springtime’, a series of family friendly events hosted in Bournemouth Town Centre, me and one other modelmaker were tasked with creating 2 meter high mushroom sculptures in 8 days. The shroom were to be used as part of a sensory experience an were built with families, children and people with intellectual and learning disabilities in mind. The stems are made of wooden shapes that slot together to create a round base, lattice using cardboard then covered in water-activated tape. A similar method was used for the caps, but with the addition of aluminium armature wire to make him sturdy yet flexible. They were then covered in strips of fabric materials, each panel with a different colour a texture, which were sewn tighter using a sewing machine and in some places hand stitched where the material was too thick for the machine.
